Driving test preparation and assessments
If you already have a practical test booked, the first step is to understand whether your driving is consistently at the right standard and what still needs attention before the test date.
Test preparation is about more than practising likely routes. We’ll focus on safe, independent driving, realistic decision-making and making sure you can deal with a wide range of situations without relying on prompts.

Current standard
We’ll look at how independently and consistently you can drive, and identify any areas that still need work.
Focus on priorities
Lessons can then concentrate on the skills and situations that will make the biggest difference to your readiness.
Prepare realistically
As you get closer to test standard, we can include realistic test-style driving and work on staying calm, focused and independent.
What an assessment looks at
An assessment is designed to give a clear picture of your current driving rather than simply counting how many lessons you’ve already had.
Control & observations
We’ll look at how confidently and consistently you use the controls, mirrors, observations and routines throughout the drive.
Planning & judgement
I’ll assess how well you read the road ahead, respond to changing situations and make safe decisions independently.
Consistent driving
We’ll also look at whether your standard stays reliable when the drive becomes busier, more complex or closer to test conditions.
Using the tuition car for your test
If you want to use my tuition car for your practical test, this needs to be agreed in advance and depends on your driving standard, preparation and my availability on the test date.
Minimum preparation
As a general rule, I normally require around 10 hours of tuition before the car can be considered for test use.
Suitable test standard
You’ll need to demonstrate that you can drive safely and independently at a suitable standard before the car is used for the test.
Instructor availability
Use of the car also depends on me being available for the test date and enough time being available beforehand for proper preparation.
Test nerves and pressure
Even when your driving is at a good standard, the pressure of a practical test can affect concentration, decision-making and confidence. Test preparation can include working on that side of the experience as well as the driving itself.
Recognise the triggers
We can identify the situations or thoughts that tend to increase nerves and affect how you drive.
Practise realistically
Test-style driving can help make the format feel more familiar and reduce the uncertainty around what to expect.
Recover and keep going
We’ll work on staying focused if something does not go perfectly, rather than letting one moment affect the rest of the drive.
