Part-Trained Learners

Driving lessons for part-trained learners

If you’ve already had driving lessons with another instructor, practised privately or taken a break from learning, you won’t need to start again from the beginning.

We’ll first look at what you can already do confidently, what still needs work and how best to build from your existing experience.

Driving lesson for a part-trained learner continuing from previous experience

Start from your current level

We’ll work from the skills you already have rather than repeating things unnecessarily.

Identify any gaps

An early lesson or assessment can help show which areas are secure and which need more practice.

Build towards your next goal

That might be becoming more confident, preparing for a test or simply getting your driving back on track after a break.

Your first lesson with me

The first lesson is a chance to see where your driving is currently at and decide what will give you the most useful next step.

Show me what you can do

We’ll look at the skills you’re already comfortable with and how independently you can apply them.

Spot the priorities

I’ll identify any areas that need more work, whether that’s observations, junctions, manoeuvres, confidence or planning.

Agree the next steps

From there, we can decide what to focus on next and how lessons should be structured around your goals.

Common reasons for changing instructor

There are lots of reasons learners move between instructors or return to lessons after a break. Whatever the reason, the aim is to make the transition straightforward and keep your progress moving.

Changing instructor

If your previous instructor is no longer available or the teaching style wasn’t working for you, we can start from your current level and move forward from there.

Returning after a break

If it’s been a while since your last lesson, we can rebuild confidence and refresh any skills that have become less familiar.

Test coming up

If you already have a practical test booked, we can assess where you are now and what still needs attention before the test date.

Working towards test readiness

If your practical test is already booked, the first priority is to understand whether your current driving is at the right standard and what still needs attention before the test date.

Assess where you are now

We’ll look at how consistently you can drive independently and whether any key areas still need improvement.

Focus on key areas

Lessons can then concentrate on the areas that will make the biggest difference to your safety, confidence and test readiness.

Be realistic about timing

If more preparation is needed, I’ll give you straightforward advice rather than rushing you towards a test before you’re ready.
