Frequently Asked Questions

Driving lessons FAQs

Whether you are starting lessons for the first time, returning after a break or preparing for your driving test, you may have a few questions before getting started.

Below are answers to some of the questions I am asked most often about lessons, availability, prices, test preparation and the way I teach.

How long are driving lessons?

My standard driving lessons are 2 hours long. This gives us enough time to work on a meaningful range of skills without the lesson feeling rushed.

How much do driving lessons cost?

A standard 2-hour lesson is £84. Block bookings are also available: 10 hours for £410 and 20 hours for £810. View Prices.

Do you teach automatic?

No. Lancaster Driving Lessons currently provides manual driving tuition only.

What areas do you cover?

Lessons are mainly available in Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham, Lancaster University and central Carnforth. See Areas Covered.

Do you teach complete beginners?

Yes. Complete beginners are very welcome. Lessons are structured around your current experience, so we can start with the basics and build your skills and confidence step by step.

Can I continue lessons started elsewhere?

Yes. If you have already had lessons with another instructor, we can begin with an assessment of your current driving and then build from where you are rather than starting again unnecessarily.

Can I use your car for my driving test?

Possibly, but this needs to be agreed in advance. As a general rule, I require around 10 hours of tuition with me before the car can be considered for use on test, and use of the car will still depend on your readiness, preparation and my availability on the test date.

Do you offer evening or weekend lessons?

Some evening and weekend lessons may be available, but these are usually the most popular times and availability can be limited. Weekday daytime spaces are generally easier to offer.

Do you help nervous or anxious learners?

Yes. Confidence building is an important part of my teaching, and I have particular experience supporting learners who feel nervous about driving or anxious about the practical test.

Do you offer refresher or post-test lessons?

Yes. Refresher lessons, motorway tuition and qualified-driver training are available for people who have already passed but would like extra support or more confidence in particular situations.

Do you provide theory support?

Yes. Theory support can be provided alongside your practical lessons, including access to learning support through TotalDrive. You will still need to do your own regular theory study and preparation outside lessons.

Do you offer intensive driving courses?

I do not normally offer intensive or semi-intensive courses. My focus is on structured lessons that give you enough time to develop safe, confident driving skills at a realistic pace.

What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?

If you need to cancel or rearrange a lesson, please give as much notice as possible. Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice are normally payable in full. Terms and Conditions can be seen here.

Do you use an app to track progress?

Yes. I use TotalDrive to support lesson planning and progress tracking, helping you see what we have covered, where you are improving and what we are likely to work on next.

How do I enquire about lessons?

You can get in touch through the website to check current availability. It helps if you include your location, current driving experience, availability and whether you already have a practical test booked.

What happens after I enquire?

I will look at your requirements and current availability and let you know what may be possible. If I do not have a suitable space immediately, we can discuss the available options rather than booking lessons that do not suit your needs.

Still have a question?

If you cannot find the answer you need here, get in touch and I’ll be happy to help with questions about lessons, availability, test preparation or the best option for your situation.
