Driving lessons for beginners
If you’re learning to drive for the first time, lessons are structured to help you build confidence steadily from the basics through to independent driving.
You don’t need any previous driving experience. We’ll begin at a pace that suits you, with clear explanations and plenty of time to practise each skill before moving on.

Start with the basics
We’ll begin with the controls, moving off and stopping safely, steering and the first simple road situations.
Build skills gradually
As your confidence develops, lessons will introduce more complex roads, junctions, traffic situations and independent driving.
Learn at your pace
There’s no fixed timetable. Progress depends on your confidence, practice and how quickly each skill becomes consistent.
What to expect from your first lessons
Your first lessons are about getting comfortable with the car, understanding the controls and beginning to develop safe routines without feeling rushed.

Getting comfortable
We’ll make sure you understand the main controls and how to set the car up correctly before you begin driving.
Moving off and stopping
You’ll learn how to move away safely, stop smoothly and begin using mirrors and observations as part of each routine.
Building early confidence
As the basics become more familiar, we’ll start to add simple junctions, turns and other everyday situations at a manageable pace.
How your learning develops
As the basics become more secure, lessons gradually introduce a wider range of situations so you can build the judgement, planning and independence needed for everyday driving.
More complex roads
You’ll begin to work on busier junctions, roundabouts, town driving and other situations that need more planning and awareness.
Independent driving
As your skills improve, you’ll take more responsibility for decisions, routes and observations with less prompting from me.
Preparing for the test
When you’re approaching the right standard, lessons will focus more on consistency, realistic test preparation and any areas that still need improvement.
Support between lessons
Learning to drive is not only about the time spent in the car. You can also use the time between lessons to build your theory knowledge, review progress and prepare for what comes next.
Theory support
You can work on your theory alongside practical lessons so the rules, signs and situations you meet on the road become more familiar.
Track your progress
TotalDrive helps you keep an eye on your lesson progress and the areas you’re currently working on.
Prepare for the next lesson
Reviewing what you’ve already covered can help you arrive at the next lesson with a clearer idea of what you want to improve.
