Being test-ready is about more than passing a mock test
Driving test readiness means being able to drive safely, independently and consistently without relying on regular help from your instructor.
A good lesson or a successful mock test can be encouraging, but test readiness is about showing the same standard repeatedly across different roads, traffic conditions and situations. You should be able to make safe decisions for yourself, recognise developing hazards and recover calmly if something does not go exactly as planned.
The aim is not simply to reach test standard once. It is to be able to maintain that standard reliably.

Signs that you may be test-ready
Driving test readiness is about showing these skills consistently, not just on one good lesson or mock test.
You need very little prompting
You can deal with most situations without your instructor having to remind you what to do. You are making your own decisions, planning ahead and responding to changes safely.
Your driving is consistent
Your standard remains steady throughout the lesson. Mistakes are occasional rather than repeated, and you can recognise and correct smaller errors without them developing into something more serious.
You can cope when things change
You are comfortable dealing with unfamiliar roads, heavier traffic, different junctions and unexpected situations. If something goes wrong, you can stay calm, reassess and continue safely.
Ready for the test—and independence
Passing the driving test is an important milestone, but the bigger goal is being ready to drive safely without an instructor beside you.
By the time you are genuinely test-ready, you should be able to take responsibility for your own decisions, manage unfamiliar situations and keep your driving safe even when things become more demanding.
That means your preparation should not be based only on whether you can get through a particular route or complete a mock test successfully. It should reflect whether you can drive independently to a good standard across a range of roads and situations.
Signs you need more preparation
A test may be approaching too soon if you still need regular prompting, make the same faults repeatedly or find that your driving standard drops noticeably when you are under pressure.
You may also need more preparation if unfamiliar roads, busier traffic or independent driving regularly cause problems that your instructor has to step in and help you manage.
Needing more time is not a setback. It simply means there are still areas to make more consistent before you are ready to drive independently and safely on test day.
Making the final decision
Your instructor can help you judge whether your driving is consistently at the standard needed for the practical test and whether there are any areas that still need more work.
The decision should be based on the overall standard of your driving rather than one particularly good or bad lesson. If your test is approaching, we will look at how independently you are driving, how consistently you deal with different situations and whether any repeated faults are still appearing.
If more preparation is needed, it is usually better to recognise that before test day and use the extra time to improve rather than simply hoping everything goes well.
